What should you know about image of stasis dermatitis?

An image of stasis dermatitis may show itchy, dry, discoloured, or scaly skin around the lower legs and ankles. A photograph cannot confirm the diagnosis, because infection, contact dermatitis, eczema, and other conditions can look similar.

Stasis dermatitis develops when blood and fluid collect more easily in the lower legs because veins are not returning blood efficiently. Skin may become red, brown, purple, tight, flaky, or thickened, and swelling often worsens after standing. The pattern may occur alongside [Varicose Veins](/conditions/varicose-veins/), but visible veins are not required. Scratching can create breaks that allow infection, and long-standing inflammation can lead to tender ulcers near the ankle.

Arrange an assessment if the change is new, persistent, spreading, or associated with leg swelling. A clinician may examine circulation, check for infection, and recommend moisturising, dressings, movement, leg elevation, or compression when appropriate. Do not start tight compression over a painful, cold, numb, or poorly perfused leg without advice.
