If your water breaks, are you in active labor?

The waters are the fluid-filled membranes around the baby. They can rupture before contractions begin, while contractions are building, or after labor is established. Active labor usually refers to regular, stronger contractions that cause progressive cervical change; the appearance of fluid alone cannot confirm that stage.

Fluid may be a sudden gush or a continuing trickle, and it can be difficult to distinguish from urine or normal discharge. The color, smell, and amount are useful details for the clinician. If the pregnancy is preterm, ruptured membranes need especially prompt evaluation because they can be associated with preterm labour.

Note when the fluid started, its color and odor, and whether it continues. Wear a sanitary pad rather than inserting anything into the vagina, and avoid intercourse until your maternity team gives advice. Call the labor ward, obstetrician, or maternity triage service even if contractions have not started. Follow their instructions about coming in, monitoring movements, and preparing for birth.

Seek urgent maternity care for heavy bleeding, green or brown fluid, fever, severe or constant abdominal pain, reduced baby movements, or a feeling that something is coming through the vagina. Contact the team immediately if you are less than full term, because preterm waters breaking requires assessment without waiting for contractions.

Ask whether the membranes have definitely ruptured, how the baby and your temperature will be checked, what signs of infection to watch for, and when you should return or call again if labor does not begin.
