If you sprain your ankle does it swell?

How the structures involved in Ligament Sprain differ from normal

Short answer

Yes, an ankle sprain can swell as the injured ligament and nearby tissues respond to sudden stretching or tearing.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Expected symptom
Swelling can occur around the ankle after ligament injury.
Check needed
Difficulty walking or bone tenderness warrants assessment.

What the swelling can mean

Swelling may appear around the outside of the ankle, although its location depends on which ligament was injured. Bruising, tenderness, reduced movement, and pain when putting weight through the foot can occur as well.

Swelling does not show how severe the injury is by itself, and a fracture can also follow a twist or fall. A clinician may check the bones, ligament stability, walking ability, and circulation rather than relying on appearance alone.

What to do at home

Protect the ankle from movements that increase pain and keep walking within a comfortable limit. Elevating the foot when resting may make it more comfortable. Use a wrapped cold pack for short periods if advised, with a barrier between the pack and skin.

Do not apply a tight bandage if the foot becomes numb, cold, pale, or more painful. Once acute pain allows, gentle ankle movement can help prevent unnecessary stiffness. A clinician may recommend [Kinesiology Taping](/treatments/physiotherapy-and-rehabilitation/kinesiology-taping/), [Splinting](/treatments/trauma-and-fracture-care/splinting/), or [Physiotherapy](/treatments/physiotherapy-and-rehabilitation/physiotherapy/).

When to seek care

Seek prompt assessment if you cannot take a few steps, pain is focused over a bone, swelling is substantial, or the ankle looks deformed. An examination may be needed to rule out a fracture or significant ligament injury.

Get urgent help for an open wound, severe numbness, a cold or discoloured foot, or rapidly worsening pain and swelling. These signs can indicate a problem requiring immediate care.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: Could this be a fracture? How much weight can I put on the foot? Should I use a brace or splint? When should I begin ankle exercises? What signs mean I should return for review?

Questions people ask

Does swelling prove that the ankle is sprained?

No. Swelling can occur with a sprain, fracture, or other injury, so the mechanism, examination, and ability to bear weight also matter.

Should I keep walking on a swollen ankle?

Stay within a comfortable level and avoid forcing weight through the foot. Seek assessment if walking is very painful or not possible.
