If you have tonsillitis?

Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils. It commonly causes a sore throat and may also cause fever, swollen glands, difficulty swallowing or earache. Viruses are a frequent cause, while strep throat is a bacterial possibility; an examination helps determine whether testing or treatment is needed.

Take small, regular drinks and choose cool or warm fluids according to what feels soothing. Soft foods can reduce irritation. Rest and avoid smoke. Use age-appropriate pain relief as directed; ask a pharmacist about interactions, pregnancy, allergies or medicines for a child. Do not use someone else’s antibiotics. If prescribed treatment, follow the instructions and arrange review if symptoms do not improve.

Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, a muffled voice, severe one-sided swelling, difficulty opening the mouth, or signs of dehydration. Arrange a GP consultation for repeated episodes, persistent fever, worsening pain, or symptoms that interfere with drinking.

Ask whether the appearance suggests a viral infection or strep throat, whether a test is needed, how to control pain, and which changes should prompt urgent reassessment.
