If you have food poisoning, how long does it last?

Short answer
If you have food poisoning, symptoms often improve within a few days, although recovery can take longer when vomiting, diarrhoea, or dehydration is severe.

How food poisoning behaves
Food poisoning is an illness caused by contaminated food or drink. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, and fever may appear together or at different times. The exact duration depends on the cause, the amount of fluid lost, and your general health. Most people gradually improve as the body clears the irritant, but ongoing symptoms should be reviewed rather than assumed to be ordinary recovery.
How to support recovery
Take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration solution, especially after loose stools or vomiting. Rest and return to light meals as your appetite allows. Avoid preparing food for others while you are unwell and wash your hands carefully. Oral rehydration therapy can help replace fluid and salts; IV fluid therapy may be considered by clinicians when drinking is not enough.
When to seek care
Get urgent help if you cannot keep fluids down, pass very little urine, feel faint or confused, have severe abdominal pain, blood in vomit or stool, or a high fever. Seek medical advice when diarrhoea or vomiting is not easing, symptoms return after improvement, or you are pregnant, older, immunocompromised, or caring for a young child.
Questions for your doctor
Ask how much fluid to take, whether you need testing, which medicines are suitable, and what changes would mean dehydration or another condition needs treatment.
