If you are spotting, are you pregnant?

Short answer
Spotting alone cannot confirm pregnancy; take a pregnancy test at the appropriate time and seek care for heavy bleeding, pain, or other warning signs.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What spotting can mean
Spotting is light bleeding between periods or around a change in your cycle. It can occur in early pregnancy, but it may also follow hormonal contraception, sex, irritation, infection, or changes in the cervix or womb. Conditions such as [Cervical Dysplasia](/conditions/cervical-dysplasia/), [Uterine Fibroids](/conditions/uterine-fibroids/), or [Endometrial Polyps](/conditions/endometrial-polyps/) can also cause bleeding between periods. The symptom does not identify one cause by itself.
What to do next
Record when the spotting began, its colour and amount, and whether it follows sex or occurs with pain. If pregnancy is possible, use a home test according to its instructions and repeat it or ask a clinician if the result is negative but your period does not arrive. Arrange a review for recurrent, post-sex, or unexplained spotting. A clinician may ask about contraception, cycle changes, discharge, and infection risk; [Chlamydia](/conditions/chlamydia/) is one infection that can affect bleeding.
When bleeding needs urgent attention
Seek urgent care for bleeding that is heavy or rapidly increasing, severe or one-sided abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, dizziness, fainting, fever, or feeling very unwell. If you may be pregnant, bleeding with pain needs prompt assessment. Ongoing or unusual bleeding also deserves review because cervical and womb conditions, including [Cervical Cancer](/conditions/cervical-cancer/) and [Womb Cancer](/conditions/endometrial-cancer/), need appropriate evaluation.
Questions to take to an appointment
Ask when to test, whether your medicines or contraception could explain the spotting, whether you need an examination or infection testing, and which changes should prompt urgent help. Mention any bleeding after sex, missed periods, pelvic pain, or pregnancy possibility.

Questions people ask
When should I take a pregnancy test?
Follow the test instructions; testing after a missed period is generally more informative than testing very early. Ask a clinician if timing is unclear.
Can spotting happen for reasons other than pregnancy?
Yes. Hormonal changes, contraception, infection, cervical irritation, fibroids, polyps, and other conditions can cause it.
