Water broke but there are no contractions: what now?

Membrane rupture and the start of contractions do not always happen at the same moment. A trickle may also be discharge or urine, so clinicians may need to confirm the fluid. They will consider your pregnancy stage, the baby’s movements and position, your temperature, bleeding, and signs of infection. Use a clean pad and record the time, colour, odour, and amount of fluid. Monitor your baby’s usual movements and notice any tightening or pain. Avoid tampons, vaginal sex, and inserting anything into the vagina unless your care team says otherwise. Keep your phone nearby, follow instructions about eating and drinking, and arrange transport to the maternity unit.

Call urgently for reduced baby movements, fever or chills, feeling unwell, heavy bleeding, green or brown fluid, severe abdominal pain, or a visible cord. Emergency help is needed if you feel faint or a part of the baby is visible. Do not wait for contractions to appear when these symptoms occur.
