If water breaks, how long before delivery?

The waters are the fluid-filled membranes around the baby. A gush or steady trickle can mean the membranes have ruptured, although urine or vaginal discharge can feel similar. Timing depends on factors such as how far along the pregnancy is, whether contractions start, the baby’s position, and your assessment findings. Note when the fluid started, its colour, smell, and approximate amount. Use a sanitary pad rather than a tampon, and avoid sex or putting anything in the vagina until your maternity team advises you. Keep your pregnancy records available, and arrange assessment even if contractions have not started. Do not drive yourself if you feel unwell, dizzy, or are having strong contractions.

Call your maternity unit immediately for heavy bleeding, green or brown fluid, a fever, feeling faint or unwell, severe constant abdominal pain, reduced baby movements, or a visible cord or part of the baby. These signs need urgent assessment. If you cannot reach your maternity service, use local emergency services.
