What spotting can mean

Some people notice light spotting around the time a period is expected in early pregnancy, while others do not bleed at all. Spotting may also happen from hormonal contraception, ovulation, irritation after sex, an infection, or a change in the cervix. A symptom is not a diagnosis: a person with spotting may or may not be pregnant.
