What should I do if my waters break?

Waters may feel like a warm gush or an ongoing trickle that you cannot control. It can be difficult to distinguish amniotic fluid from urine or discharge, so do not assume the cause from appearance alone. Labour may already be underway, or contractions may begin later. If you are before term, the leak may signal preterm labour and needs urgent review.

Write down when the leak began and whether the fluid is clear, pink, green, or brown. Wear a sanitary or maternity pad so the team can assess the fluid; do not insert a tampon. Avoid sex and swimming until you have received medical advice. Keep your phone charged, arrange transport if asked to attend, and continue to notice your baby's movements.

Call for urgent maternity help if you have heavy bleeding, green or brown fluid, fever, severe pain, reduced baby movements, or strong regular contractions. If you are preterm, contact the maternity service immediately even if you feel well. Emergency symptoms should not be managed by waiting at home.

Ask where you should be assessed, how to monitor movements and contractions, whether you can eat or drink, and which symptoms require emergency services rather than routine maternity advice.
