What should you know about IDH glioma?

IDH refers to genes that make enzymes involved in cell metabolism. A laboratory may identify an IDH1 or IDH2 change in tumour tissue. The result is one part of a wider diagnosis, alongside the tumour’s appearance under the microscope, its grade, location, and other molecular findings. It does not by itself describe every feature of an individual tumour or predict exactly how one person will feel.

Symptoms depend on where the glioma is located and can include seizures, headaches, weakness, speech changes, or changes in memory and thinking. Some people have few symptoms at first. A tissue diagnosis helps the specialist team name the tumour accurately.

Ask the neuro-oncology team which IDH gene was tested, whether the result was confirmed on tumour tissue, and how it fits with the full pathology report. Treatment may involve surgery to remove as much tumour as can be safely reached, followed by observation, radiotherapy, drug treatment, or a combination. The choice depends on grade, tumour position, symptoms, age, general health, and the operation findings.

Seek urgent medical help for a first seizure, a seizure lasting longer than usual, sudden weakness on one side, new trouble speaking, severe confusion, repeated vomiting, or a rapidly worsening headache.
