Mild ichthyosis vulgaris

You may notice roughness or fine flakes on the shins, upper arms or torso, with little redness. Dry air, frequent hot showers and fragranced products can make the texture easier to see. Mild symptoms can still feel tight or itchy, especially after washing. The appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis, because ordinary dry skin and other scaling conditions may look alike.

Wash with lukewarm water, pat dry and apply a fragrance-free cream or ointment while the skin is damp. Repeat whenever the skin feels tight. Choose soft clothing and avoid abrasive scrubs. If basic moisturising is not enough, a dermatologist may recommend a scale-softening ingredient and explain where to use it. Arrange an appointment if the area becomes very itchy, inflamed, cracked, painful or widespread, or if the pattern changes despite your routine. Get prompt medical attention for pus, increasing warmth, swelling, rapidly spreading redness or fever. A clinician can distinguish a flare from infection or another skin problem.
