What should you know about ichthyosis vulgaris?

The condition often produces small, pale or darker flakes with a rough texture, especially on the shins, arms or trunk. It may be more noticeable in dry weather and less visible when the air is humid. The palms can have more prominent lines, and some people also have a tendency toward eczema or other sensitive-skin symptoms.

Ichthyosis vulgaris is not caused by poor hygiene. A clinician uses the pattern, personal history and family history to decide whether it fits, because several other conditions can cause dry or scaly skin.

Wash with lukewarm water, keep showers brief, and use cleanser only where needed. Within a few minutes of patting dry, apply a rich, fragrance-free emollient over the affected areas. Creams or ointments may protect better than thin lotions when the skin is very dry.

Do not scrape scale aggressively. If basic moisturising is not enough, a clinician may suggest an ingredient that helps loosen scale or a prescription option. Apply any active product exactly as directed, especially on sensitive areas.

Arrange an appointment if scaling is new, extensive, worsening, or not improving with a consistent moisturising routine. Ask for prompt care when cracks become painful, the skin is hot or swollen, fluid or pus appears, or fever develops. A sudden widespread change, particularly after a new medicine, should be reviewed without delay.
