Ichthyosis laser treatment: what to consider

Ichthyosis results from abnormal shedding and a weakened skin barrier, so a laser does not simply remove the underlying cause. Laser devices use concentrated light or heat and can irritate, burn, or change pigmentation, especially when the skin is already dry, cracked, or inflamed.

A dermatologist would first confirm the diagnosis and assess the body areas involved, skin tone, medicines, infection risk, and the goal of treatment. Improving scale control and comfort is different from treating a scar or a cosmetic texture concern, and those goals should not be confused.

Ask for a plan centred on regular moisturising, gentle cleansing, and any prescribed medicines. Emollient therapy can soften scale and protect the barrier; use it exactly as directed. Do not schedule laser over open cracks, active infection, sunburn, or an unexplained rash.

If a specialist still considers a device, ask which device is proposed, what it is intended to change, how many sessions may be discussed, how skin will be protected, and what recovery involves. A small test area and clear aftercare instructions may be considered, depending on the device and your skin.

Postpone a procedure and contact the clinic for increasing redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, fever, or new painful cracks. After treatment, seek prompt medical advice for blistering, severe pain, spreading redness, or a marked pigment change.
