Ice for eye bags: what it can and cannot do

Wrap an ice pack in a soft cloth, or use a clean cool compress. Hold it gently over closed eyes for a short period and stop if the skin becomes numb, painful, or very pale. Never place ice directly on eyelid skin. Cooling can make morning swelling look less noticeable, especially after poor sleep, crying, heat, or a salty meal. The effect is temporary. Bags caused by skin laxity or an outward fat pad will not be corrected by cold. Shadows from tear-trough hollows can also look like bags even when there is little swelling.

Use light pressure and avoid rubbing the delicate eye area. Keep your head slightly raised when resting, protect the area from sun, and consider whether allergies or an irritating product are adding to swelling. Seek urgent care for an eye injury or any rapid change in vision. Recurrent swelling without an obvious trigger also deserves an assessment rather than repeated ice use.
