What should you know about ice cold feet and hands?

Blood vessels narrow in cold conditions, reducing heat loss from the skin. Stress, nicotine, some medicines, low body weight, anaemia, an underactive thyroid, or reduced blood flow in the legs can also contribute. Numbness, colour change, pain, weakness, skin sores, or symptoms that affect one side provide useful clues. The symptom itself does not identify one diagnosis.

Warm gradually with dry socks, gloves, comfortable layers, and gentle movement. Avoid placing numb skin directly against a heater or using very hot water. Notice when symptoms occur, whether fingers or toes change colour, and whether fatigue, breathlessness, dizziness, leg pain, or weight change accompanies them. A clinician may review medicines and consider blood tests or circulation checks.

Get urgent help if a hand or foot suddenly becomes cold, pale or blue, very painful, weak, numb, or difficult to move. Arrange a prompt appointment for persistent symptoms, walking-related leg pain, non-healing sores, marked tiredness, or breathlessness. These features need assessment of circulation and other possible causes.
