I wake up with pins and needles in my hands: what should I know?

Short answer
Pins and needles in your hands on waking often follow sleeping pressure on a nerve, but persistent, recurrent, or one-sided symptoms need medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Often positional
- Symptoms may ease after moving a compressed wrist, elbow, neck, or shoulder
- Book a review
- For recurring, persistent, spreading symptoms or reduced grip
- Emergency signs
- Sudden one-sided weakness or numbness, facial droop, speech or vision change
Possible explanations
A bent wrist, elbow, or neck position can temporarily compress a nerve and cause tingling that fades after movement. Repeated symptoms may reflect irritation at the wrist or neck, reduced blood flow from a sleeping position, or Peripheral Neuropathy. Type 2 Diabetes, Vitamin B12 Deficiency, and Hypothyroidism can affect nerves and are worth considering when tingling persists or occurs with weakness, balance trouble, fatigue, or other body areas.
Anxiety or rapid breathing can cause tingling around the hands and mouth; Generalised Anxiety Disorder or Panic Disorder may be relevant when episodes occur with fear, racing heartbeat, or breathlessness. These conditions are possibilities, not conclusions from hand tingling alone.
What you can do
Change your sleeping position and gently move your fingers, wrist, elbow, and shoulder when symptoms appear. Avoid prolonged pressure on an elbow or tightly flexed wrist, and notice whether daytime typing or repetitive work makes it worse. Keep a record of which hand is affected, how long the sensation lasts, any weakness or pain, and whether it spreads. Arrange a routine appointment if symptoms recur, last after you are up, disturb sleep, or affect grip. Do not ignore a gradual loss of sensation that could lead to unnoticed injury.
When to seek urgent care
Call emergency services for sudden numbness or weakness, especially on one side, facial drooping, trouble speaking, severe dizziness, new vision changes, or loss of coordination. These can be signs of Stroke or Transient Ischaemic Attack and need immediate assessment, even if they improve. Seek prompt advice for rapidly worsening symptoms, severe neck pain, or a hand that becomes cold, pale, blue, or very painful.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your pattern suggests nerve compression, a metabolic cause, or breathing-related tingling; whether blood tests or nerve assessment are appropriate; and how to protect areas with reduced sensation. Bring your symptom diary and medication list.

Questions people ask
Why do my hands tingle only after sleep?
Pressure from a bent wrist, elbow, neck, or shoulder position can temporarily irritate a nerve. Recurrent episodes still merit review if they last or worsen.
When could hand tingling be a stroke warning?
Sudden one-sided numbness or weakness with facial drooping, speech trouble, vision change, dizziness, or poor coordination requires emergency help.
