I have been sneezing all day: what should I know?

Itchy eyes, a clear watery discharge, and symptoms after dust, cleaning, or animal contact fit allergic rhinitis. A sore throat, tiredness, cough, or gradually changing mucus can occur with a common cold. House dust mite and pet allergy can cause repeated symptoms in particular rooms or around an animal. Sneezing alone cannot identify one cause.

Move away from smoke, perfume, dust, and other suspected triggers, and ventilate the room. Wash your face and hands after exposure and consider a saline nasal rinse made with safe prepared water. Rest and drink fluids if you feel unwell. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether allergy medication is appropriate for your symptoms and other medicines.

Get urgent help if sneezing occurs with swelling of the lips or tongue, wheezing, trouble breathing, faintness, or a rapidly spreading rash. Arrange medical advice if symptoms are severe, repeatedly disturb sleep, come with high fever or facial pain, or do not settle after avoiding a likely trigger.

Tell your clinician when the sneezing started, where it happens, and whether you have itchy eyes, congestion, fever, cough, or wheezing. Ask whether testing or a treatment plan could help identify recurring environmental triggers.
