I think I have strep throat: what should I know?

Strep throat is a bacterial throat infection that can cause a sudden sore throat, fever, swollen neck glands and painful swallowing. These symptoms can also occur with viral infections or Tonsillitis, so symptoms alone do not confirm the cause.

People with strep throat may develop Sore Throat that starts quickly, Fever, tender Swollen Glands in the neck, red tonsils or patches on the tonsils. Cough, runny nose and hoarseness make a viral cause more likely, but no single symptom is a reliable diagnosis. A clinician may examine your throat and use a rapid test or throat swab when appropriate.

Rest, drink enough fluid, and choose cool or warm drinks and soft foods that are comfortable. Gargling with warm salt water may soothe an adult or older child who can gargle safely. Do not share cups, utensils or toothbrushes, and wash hands regularly. Arrange a GP Consultation if pain is significant, symptoms are worsening or strep is suspected. Antibiotic Treatment is used when a bacterial infection is diagnosed or strongly suspected; take it exactly as prescribed and do not use leftover medicine.

Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, a muffled voice, severe one-sided throat pain, neck swelling, dehydration, confusion or rapidly worsening symptoms. Contact a clinician promptly if Fever persists, a rash appears, or you have repeated episodes. Children who seem unusually sleepy or cannot drink need prompt assessment.
