I think I have food poisoning

Food poisoning is an illness caused by contaminated food or drink. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, cramps and fever can develop, sometimes after others who ate the same food become unwell. Similar symptoms can come from viruses, medicines or other conditions, so the timing and pattern matter.

The main short-term concern is losing more fluid than you can replace. Young children, older adults, pregnant people and anyone with significant health problems can become unwell more quickly.

Take frequent small sips of water or Oral Rehydration Therapy. Rest, eat light foods when able and wash hands carefully. Avoid preparing food for other people while you are ill and follow local advice about returning to work or school.

If you cannot keep fluids down, a clinician may consider IV Fluid Therapy. Do not use anti-diarrhoeal medicines or antibiotics without suitable advice.

Seek urgent care for blood in vomit or stool, severe or worsening abdominal pain, fainting, confusion, very little urine, inability to keep fluids down or signs of serious dehydration. Arrange prompt medical advice for persistent fever or illness in a vulnerable person.
