I think I have depression

Short answer
Depression can affect mood, sleep, energy, concentration and interest, so persistent changes deserve a compassionate clinical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Changes to notice
- Mood, interest, sleep, energy and concentration
- Urgent concern
- Thoughts of self-harm or being unable to stay safe
What it may mean
Depression may involve low mood, hopelessness, loss of pleasure, fatigue, irritability, difficulty concentrating or changes in appetite and sleep. Feeling anxious can occur too. Symptoms may make work, relationships and self-care harder, but their presence does not confirm one diagnosis.
A clinician will ask how long the changes have lasted, how they affect daily life and whether physical health, medicines, grief, stress or another mental health condition may be involved. Insomnia can worsen mood and daytime functioning.
What to do now
Tell someone you trust what has changed and arrange a GP appointment or mental health assessment. Keep basic routines where possible: regular food, hydration, daylight, gentle movement and contact with supportive people. Set small tasks rather than expecting yourself to solve everything at once.
Write down mood, sleep, energy, concentration and any thoughts of self-harm before the appointment. This gives the clinician a clearer picture.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help now if you may harm yourself, cannot stay safe, hear or see things others do not, or cannot manage essential care. Contact emergency services or a trusted person and do not remain alone during immediate danger.
Questions for your doctor
Could these symptoms be depression or another condition? What support is available, and what should I do if my safety or sleep deteriorates?
