I peeled skin off my lip and now it is swollen

Peeling can remove the lip's protective surface and cause a small traumatic wound. Irritation, dryness, a contact reaction to a lip product, or an underlying rash can also contribute. Swelling confined to the injured area may settle as the surface repairs, but warmth, increasing tenderness, crusting, or discharge can signal infection.

Wash your hands before touching the area. Rinse with clean lukewarm water, pat dry, and apply a thin layer of plain petroleum jelly or another fragrance-free barrier. Avoid licking, biting, exfoliating, fragranced balms, strong acids, and spicy or acidic foods if they sting. Do not remove a scab or loose tissue. Use a cool, clean compress briefly for comfort, and avoid sharing lip products while the skin is open.

Call emergency services for swelling of the tongue or throat, wheezing, difficulty breathing, trouble swallowing, faintness, or rapidly spreading facial swelling. Arrange prompt medical assessment for pus, fever, red streaking, severe pain, a spreading blistering rash, or swelling that keeps worsening. A clinician can distinguish injury from conditions such as sunburn or another inflammatory rash.

Ask which lip products are safe while the surface is open, whether the wound needs treatment, and what symptoms would mean an infection or allergic reaction is developing.
