I keep spotting after my period

Spotting can be leftover menstrual blood, ovulation-related bleeding, a response to hormonal contraception, or irritation after sex. Chlamydia and other infections may inflame the cervix and cause bleeding. Polyps or fibroids can affect the womb and contribute to irregular bleeding. Cervical dysplasia, cervical cancer, or womb cancer can also present with abnormal bleeding, although spotting alone cannot determine the cause. Repetition is a reason to arrange a review, especially after sex or after menopause.

Record each episode, including its relation to your period, amount, colour, triggers, pain, discharge, and contraception. Take a pregnancy test if relevant. Book a clinician appointment if the spotting keeps returning or lasts beyond a short episode. Your assessment may include cycle questions, a pregnancy test, infection testing, cervical screening review, or an examination depending on your age and symptoms.

Get urgent help for heavy bleeding, faintness, severe or one-sided pelvic pain, shoulder-tip pain, or bleeding when pregnancy is possible. Fever, pelvic pain, or offensive discharge needs prompt assessment for infection. Bleeding after menopause should be reviewed even when it is light. Do not wait for a routine appointment if you feel acutely unwell.
