Pins and needles in my left hand

A hand can tingle after you sleep on an arm, lean on an elbow, or hold a wrist in one position. Neck irritation, carpal tunnel syndrome, and peripheral neuropathy can also affect sensation. Medical conditions such as Type 2 Diabetes, Vitamin B12 Deficiency, or Hypothyroidism may contribute. Anxiety or a Panic Disorder can cause tingling during rapid breathing, often with other symptoms such as a racing heart or light-headedness.

Change position, gently move the fingers and wrist, and remove anything tight around the hand or arm. Note when the sensation began, whether it reaches the forearm, and whether weakness, pain, or neck symptoms occur. Arrange a clinical assessment if it keeps returning, lasts after changing position, or interferes with gripping. A clinician may examine strength, reflexes, circulation, and sensation, then decide whether blood tests or nerve assessment are useful.

Seek emergency help immediately if the tingling starts suddenly with facial drooping, trouble speaking, confusion, severe dizziness, vision change, or weakness on one side. These can be signs of a Stroke or Transient Ischaemic Attack. Urgent assessment is also needed for chest pressure, severe breathlessness, or a cold, pale, and painful hand.
