I have pain in my groin area: what should I know?

Short answer

Groin pain can come from the hip, adductor muscles or nearby structures, so note its triggers and seek assessment when it persists, limits movement or follows an injury.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Location clue
Deep groin pain can be related to the hip, but location alone is not diagnostic
Until assessed
Avoid sharp-pain movements and high-load twisting
Prompt review
Needed for inability to bear weight, fever or severe associated symptoms

What groin pain can mean

The groin sits where the abdomen, pelvis and upper thigh meet, so pain there does not identify one single cause. A muscle or tendon may be irritated after sprinting, kicking, twisting or a sudden increase in activity. Hip-related pain may feel deep in the groin and may worsen with sitting, turning or bringing the knee upward.

Hip conditions that can present with groin pain include [Hip Impingement](/conditions/hip-impingement/), [Hip Labral Tear](/conditions/hip-labral-tear/) and [Hip Osteoarthritis](/conditions/hip-osteoarthritis/). These are possibilities to assess, not conclusions based on pain location alone.

What to do now

Pause sprinting, cutting, kicking and other movements that clearly reproduce the pain. Keep gentle walking and comfortable hip movement if they do not worsen symptoms, and avoid stretching aggressively into sharp pain. Record when the pain began, what activity preceded it, where it travels and whether coughing, stairs, sitting or turning affects it.

A sports-focused assessment can examine hip motion, muscle strength and movement technique. [Sports Physiotherapy](/treatments/physiotherapy-and-rehabilitation/sports-physiotherapy/) may help guide a graded return when activity has contributed to symptoms.

When to seek care

Seek prompt assessment if you cannot bear weight, heard a pop during injury, have major bruising or swelling, or develop fever, severe abdominal symptoms, testicular pain or a painful bulge. Arrange a routine review if pain persists, recurs with sport, causes a limp or interferes with sleep or daily activity.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the pain appears to come from the hip joint, adductors or another area, whether imaging is needed, and which activities are safe while symptoms settle. Ask for clear milestones before returning to running or sport.

Questions people ask

Is groin pain always a muscle strain?

No. Groin pain may involve muscles, tendons, the hip joint or other nearby structures, so an examination can clarify the source.

Can I exercise with groin pain?

Choose comfortable low-load movement and stop activities that reproduce sharp pain, limping or increasing symptoms.
