I have little bumps on my arms: what should I know?

Short answer
Little bumps on the arms are often linked to keratin around hair follicles or follicle inflammation, but their appearance determines the right care.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Rough and uniform
- Often fits keratosis pilaris
- Tender or pus-filled
- Can indicate folliculitis
What the bumps may represent
Rough, dry, closely grouped bumps on the outer upper arms are typical of keratosis pilaris, sometimes called chicken skin. It is related to keratin blocking follicle openings and may be more noticeable when skin is dry. Red, tender, itchy, or pus-filled bumps around individual hairs may instead be folliculitis. A clinician can distinguish these from bites, eczema, or another rash by looking at the distribution and surface.
Gentle care for smoother skin
Use a short lukewarm shower, mild cleanser, and fragrance-free moisturiser. For rough bumps, a leave-on product containing urea, lactic acid, or salicylic acid may help; apply sparingly and stop if it burns or causes a rash. Do not squeeze, scratch, or scrub hard. If bumps are painful or pus-filled, avoid shaving over them and arrange an assessment rather than borrowing antibiotics.
When to get checked
Seek prompt care if redness spreads, pain becomes marked, pus increases, fever develops, or several painful nodules appear. A persistent, rapidly changing, or widespread rash also merits review. Routine care is reasonable when rough bumps remain despite consistent gentle moisturising or affect your quality of life.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the pattern fits keratosis pilaris or folliculitis, which active ingredient suits your skin, how often to use it, and how long to continue. Ask how shaving, sweating, or clothing may be contributing.

Questions people ask
Should I squeeze the bumps?
No. Squeezing can injure follicles, increase inflammation, and leave marks.
Does keratosis pilaris need treatment?
It is harmless for many people, but moisturisers and carefully chosen keratolytic products can improve texture.
