I have itching near my private area: what should I know?

Sweat, friction, tight clothing, fragranced wash, condoms, lubricants, or laundry products can trigger contact dermatitis. Moist folds may support a skin yeast infection. Scabies can cause intense itching, often worse at night, with bumps in other areas or affected close contacts. Atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, lichen planus, asteatotic eczema, and hives can also affect genital or nearby skin. Burning urination, discharge, sores, or pain may point to a problem requiring sexual-health or medical assessment.

Rinse gently with lukewarm water, pat dry, and wear loose breathable underwear. Stop new fragranced products and avoid scratching, shaving over irritated skin, or sharing towels. Keep the area dry and avoid self-treating with steroid, antifungal, or combination creams unless a clinician or pharmacist has advised the product and site. Avoid sexual contact if there are sores, discharge, or concern about an infection until assessed.

Arrange prompt care for swelling, severe pain, blisters, ulcers, pus, fever, spreading redness, testicular pain, or difficulty passing urine. Seek urgent help for sudden testicular pain or rapidly increasing swelling. A persistent or recurrent itch, or symptoms after sexual contact, needs an examination and possibly targeted testing.

Tell the clinician when the itch began, where it is, whether it is worse at night, and what products or sexual exposures preceded it. Ask whether the skin needs a swab, scraping, or sexual-health test and which treatment is safe for genital skin.
