I have been sneezing all day: what should I know?

Sneezing all day often reflects an irritated nose, so look for allergy, infection and environmental triggers. Allergic symptoms tend to include itching, watery eyes and clear discharge, while a common cold may add sore throat, blocked nose, cough or feeling unwell.

Allergic rhinitis may be triggered by pollen, dust or indoor particles. House dust mite allergy and pet allergy can cause repeated sneezing, nasal itching and congestion around those exposures. A common cold can begin with sneezing before other symptoms appear. Dry air, fragrance, smoke and sudden temperature changes can irritate the nose without an infection. The timing, nasal discharge and accompanying symptoms help a clinician separate these patterns.

Wash your face and hands after outdoor exposure, ventilate rooms without exposing yourself to a known trigger, and avoid smoke and strong scents. Saline nasal rinsing may soothe irritation when performed with safe, clean water and suitable equipment. Rest and drink fluids if you feel unwell. Seek urgent help for sneezing with swelling of the lips or tongue, throat tightness, wheezing, faintness or trouble breathing. Arrange medical advice for persistent fever, facial pain, one-sided foul discharge, repeated nosebleeds, breathing symptoms or symptoms that interfere with sleep and daily activity.
