What should you know about hyperhidrosis body odor?

Short answer
Hyperhidrosis can worsen body odour because persistent moisture allows normal skin bacteria to produce stronger-smelling compounds.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why odour can happen
Sweat itself is often not strongly scented. Odour develops when bacteria on moist skin interact with sweat and skin debris, especially in the armpits, groin and feet. Clothing can hold moisture and smell even after the skin has been washed. Odour does not prove that someone is unclean. Red, sore or itchy folds may indicate irritation or a separate condition such as intertrigo, heat rash or tinea versicolor, so the skin should be examined if changes persist.
Reducing moisture and smell
Wash gently, dry skin folds carefully, change sweaty clothing and choose breathable fabrics. Deodorant helps mask or reduce odour, while antiperspirant reduces sweat; they are different products and may be combined if your skin tolerates them. If over-the-counter care is inadequate, a dermatologist may consider Prescription Antiperspirant, Botox For Sweating or Microwave Sweat Gland Treatment. Treating the moisture often helps odour, but persistent smell may need its own assessment.
When to seek care
Arrange a review if odour changes suddenly, remains after careful washing and drying, or occurs with rash, pain, cracking, discharge or sores. Seek prompt care for sweating with fever, fainting, chest discomfort, breathing trouble, confusion or severe weakness. A clinician should also assess sweating that begins unexpectedly or follows a medicine change.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the odour is coming from sweat, infected or irritated skin, or another source; which cleanser or antiperspirant is suitable; and whether a treatment for excessive sweating could improve the problem.

Questions people ask
Does hyperhidrosis always cause body odour?
No. Odour depends on the body area, moisture, bacteria, clothing and skin condition; some people sweat heavily without a strong smell.
Can deodorant stop hyperhidrosis?
Deodorant can manage smell, but an antiperspirant is designed to reduce sweating.
