Short answer

Hypercalcemia in prostate cancer is a high blood calcium level that needs prompt assessment for cancer-related and other causes.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main concern
High calcium can affect hydration, kidneys, muscles, alertness, and heart rhythm.
Medication check
Review supplements and medicines with the oncology team.

What the result can mean

Calcium may rise when bone is releasing more mineral, when dehydration concentrates the blood, or because of medicines, parathyroid disease, or kidney problems. Prostate cancer can affect bones, but a calcium result alone does not show why it is high or whether cancer has progressed.

Possible symptoms include thirst, frequent urination, constipation, nausea, abdominal discomfort, muscle weakness, drowsiness, confusion, and changes in heartbeat. Blood tests usually assess calcium and kidney function, while the oncology team decides whether imaging or other cancer tests are needed.

What to do next

Tell the prostate cancer team promptly about a high calcium result, worsening thirst, vomiting, constipation, weakness, or changes in alertness. Treatment may involve fluids and bone-directed medicines, while the cancer plan is reviewed. Depending on the disease and previous care, the team may discuss radiotherapy, targeted radioisotope therapy, hormone or systemic treatment, bone-strengthening therapy, or surgery. Avoid calcium supplements unless prescribed.

When to get urgent help

Go to emergency care for confusion, fainting, severe drowsiness, repeated vomiting, inability to drink, chest pain, a racing or irregular heartbeat, or very little urine. New severe back pain, leg weakness, or loss of bladder control also needs urgent assessment because prostate cancer can affect the spine and nerves.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what may be raising the calcium, whether kidney function is affected, how quickly treatment is needed, whether bone imaging is appropriate, and how current prostate cancer treatment should change. Mention any difficulty passing urine, new pain, or confusion.

Questions people ask

Does high calcium prove prostate cancer has spread?

No. It can have several causes, and the oncology team needs blood tests and clinical assessment to interpret it.

Can prostate cancer treatment lower calcium?

Treating the underlying cancer may help, while fluids and bone-directed medicines can address the calcium itself.
