What should you know about hydatidiform molar pregnancy?

In a molar pregnancy, placental cells grow abnormally and a normal developing pregnancy is not present. It may be complete, with no embryo, or partial, with abnormal fetal tissue alongside the molar tissue. Bleeding, severe nausea, pelvic pressure, or a uterus larger than expected can occur, although some cases are found during an ultrasound.

Clinicians use ultrasound, examination, and blood tests for human chorionic gonadotropin, often called hCG. A specialist reviews the tissue after removal and watches hCG over time because persistent molar tissue may need additional treatment.

Contact the maternity or gynaecology team promptly if a molar pregnancy is suspected. Treatment commonly involves removing the abnormal tissue, followed by scheduled hCG tests. Keep every follow-up appointment and ask when it is safe to try for another pregnancy. Use the contraception advised by the specialist during monitoring so a new pregnancy does not make hCG results difficult to interpret. Chemotherapy may be recommended when abnormal trophoblastic tissue persists or behaves like cancer.

Seek urgent care for heavy vaginal bleeding, severe pelvic or abdominal pain, fainting, breathlessness, chest pain, or persistent vomiting with inability to drink. Contact the specialist quickly for a new rise in bleeding, worsening symptoms, or a missed hCG test.
