What should you know about hyaluronic acid skin care?

Hyaluronic acid is a water-binding substance used in many serums, creams, and gels. Applied to the skin, it can make dryness feel more comfortable and leave the surface feeling smoother or plumper. It does not replace treatment for eczema, infection, persistent rash, or another diagnosed skin condition.

The formula matters as much as the ingredient. Fragrance, exfoliating acids, retinoids, or preservatives may irritate sensitive skin even when hyaluronic acid itself is tolerated. A product labelled for the face may not suit broken or inflamed skin.

Patch-test a new product on a small area as directed on its label. Cleanse gently, apply a small amount to slightly damp skin, and follow with a moisturiser to reduce water loss. Use sunscreen during daytime exposure. Introduce one new product at a time so you can identify the cause if burning, itching, or a rash appears.

Avoid applying skincare over open wounds unless a clinician has advised it. Keep products away from the eyes and follow storage instructions.
