When hyaluronic acid seems to have ruined your skin

Dryness, tightness, stinging, redness, bumps, swelling, or a change in texture can follow a new skincare product, but the ingredient itself may not be the only explanation. Fragrance, preservatives, acids, occlusive ingredients, contamination, sun exposure, or an unrelated skin condition can produce similar changes. After an injection, swelling and tenderness may have a different cause from a rash or infection. Timing, location, product form, and whether the skin is hot or draining help a clinician sort these possibilities.

Pause the new product and keep the packaging, ingredient list, and purchase details. Use gentle cleansing and avoid scrubs, exfoliating acids, retinoids, fragrance, and home procedures while the skin settles. Do not squeeze lumps or inject another substance to counter the change. Take dated photographs in consistent light and record when symptoms began. If a clinician reviews you, mention all products used on the area, medicines, allergies, and any recent procedure. The treatment depends on the finding, so avoid borrowing prescription creams.

Get emergency help for breathing difficulty, facial or tongue swelling, faintness, or rapidly spreading hives. Seek prompt care for severe pain, rapidly increasing swelling, fever, pus, spreading warmth, skin that becomes pale or dusky, or any vision change after an injection. Arrange a medical review for a reaction that is persistent, recurrent, or affecting the eyes. Do not wait for a cosmetic reaction to become severe before asking for an examination.

Ask whether the pattern suggests irritation, allergy, infection, or another condition; whether you should restart any products; and what gentle care is appropriate. If you had an injection, ask what was administered, when improvement should be checked, and which symptoms require urgent contact.
