Hyaluronic acid and pregnancy stretch marks: what to know

Stretch marks form when skin stretches and its deeper supporting fibres change. They may begin as pink, red, purple, or darker lines and often become less noticeable with time, although each person’s skin responds differently. A hyaluronic acid cream or serum can add water to the outer skin and reduce a dry, tight feeling. That surface hydration is different from rebuilding deeper skin structure. Product ingredients, concentration, and added fragrances vary, so a product labelled hyaluronic acid is not automatically suitable for pregnancy or sensitive skin.

Use a simple, fragrance-free moisturiser if your skin feels dry, and patch-test new products on a small area. Avoid applying products to broken, inflamed, or infected skin. Do not inject hyaluronic acid yourself or arrange a cosmetic injection without a pregnancy-specific assessment. If you are considering treatment after delivery, take the product name, ingredients, medical history, allergies, and feeding plans to the consultation. A clinician can explain whether the proposed treatment is intended for skin, a scar, or another body area, because those uses are not interchangeable.

Seek medical advice if a product causes spreading redness, marked swelling, blistering, severe burning, or breathing difficulty. Contact your maternity team promptly for a new widespread rash, intense itching, or skin changes with other pregnancy symptoms. After an injection, urgent assessment is needed for rapidly increasing pain, pale or dusky skin, fever, pus, or vision changes. These signs need examination rather than more cream or massage.
