What should you know about hyaluronic acid intramuscular injection?

Intramuscular means the injection is delivered into muscle rather than into a joint, under the skin, or onto the skin. Hyaluronic acid is naturally found in the body, but a formulation made for one route should not automatically be used in another. The product instructions and the clinician’s treatment plan must agree.

If the goal is joint comfort, an intramuscular injection may not address the joint space directly. If the goal is skin hydration, an injection into muscle is also a different approach. Clarifying the diagnosis and intended benefit prevents confusion about what the treatment can do.

Ask the prescriber to name the exact product, route, purpose, and licensed setting for administration. Share allergies, fever, infection, bleeding problems, pregnancy, and medicines that affect clotting. Do not inject a product at home, and do not use a topical or joint-labeled preparation in muscle.
