Hyaluronic acid in the knee

Hyaluronic acid is a substance found naturally in joint fluid. An injection places a prepared product into the knee joint with the aim of supporting movement and easing symptoms for some people. It does not repair every cause of knee pain, and it may not be appropriate when pain comes from an injury, infection, inflammatory disease, or a problem outside the joint. Tell the clinician where the pain is, how it affects walking or stairs, whether the knee swells or locks, and what treatments you have tried. Seek urgent medical advice for a hot, increasingly swollen knee, fever, severe or escalating pain, pus, or inability to bear weight after an injection. Emergency assessment is needed for fainting, breathing difficulty, facial or throat swelling, or sudden widespread hives. A new calf swelling or severe calf pain also warrants prompt assessment.
