What should you know about hyaluronic acid for microneedling?

Microneedling uses fine needles to create controlled, tiny channels in the skin. A clinician may use a suitable hyaluronic acid product to help the device move smoothly and to support surface hydration. This is different from injecting hyaluronic acid as a filler, and a topical product used during microneedling should not automatically be treated as an injectable product.

Short-lived redness, warmth, tightness, sensitivity and pinpoint bleeding can happen. Irritation may be greater when the skin is already inflamed, sunburned or affected by an active infection.

Choose a trained practitioner who opens sterile supplies appropriately and can name the exact product being used. Tell them about eczema, acne flares, cold sores, allergies, medicines that affect bleeding and recent peels, lasers or injections. Before treatment, avoid applying unapproved products to freshly needled skin. Afterward, follow the specific cleansing and moisturising plan, avoid picking, and protect the area from sun and excessive heat while it recovers.

Do not perform medical microneedling at home with a product that has not been assessed for that use. A follow-up can help distinguish ordinary irritation from a reaction needing treatment.

Ask for medical advice if redness, swelling, tenderness or heat is spreading or worsening, or if pus, fever or a worsening rash appears. Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, marked facial swelling, sudden vision symptoms, severe pain or rapidly changing skin colour.

Ask whether the hyaluronic acid is intended for topical use during microneedling, how sterility is maintained, what recovery is expected, and which symptoms should trigger a call.
