What should you know about hyaluronic acid dermal filler injection?

Hyaluronic acid is a water-attracting substance used in a gel formulation. In a dermal filler procedure, a trained clinician assesses the area, discusses the intended change, and places small amounts at selected depths. The result depends on the product, injection technique, skin or soft-tissue anatomy, and the goal being treated. Temporary swelling, tenderness, bruising, or a feeling of firmness can occur while the area settles.

This is different from an injection intended for a joint. Filler should not be treated as a substitute for assessment of unexplained swelling, a skin lesion, infection, or a painful structural problem.

Choose a licensed medical professional who can explain the product name, treatment area, expected appearance, alternatives, and consent process. Share allergies, previous filler or implant procedures, skin infections, bleeding problems, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and every medicine or supplement you use. Do not conceal a recent dental or cosmetic procedure.

After treatment, follow the clinician's instructions about touching, pressure, exercise, heat, and makeup. Keep the area clean and observe it in good light. Do not massage a firm or uneven spot unless the treating clinician specifically advises it, because the correct aftercare depends on the product and location.

Contact the treating clinic promptly for worsening pain, spreading redness, increasing warmth, marked swelling, drainage, fever, or skin colour changes. Seek urgent medical care for sudden vision changes, severe headache, weakness, trouble speaking, facial drooping, or severe pain with pale or mottled skin after an injection. These symptoms need immediate assessment rather than home observation.

Ask which product and injection plane are planned, what improvement is realistic, how long the area may remain swollen, what aftercare applies, and who to contact outside clinic hours. Ask how previous filler, dental work, skin disease, medicines, or allergies could change the plan.
