Hyaluronic acid and cartilage: what to know

Cartilage is the smooth tissue covering the ends of bones inside a joint. It helps the surfaces move with less friction, while joint fluid supports movement and shock handling. Hyaluronic acid is naturally found in joint fluid; an injection places a prepared form into the joint. It may reduce friction or alter pain signalling, but it cannot replace a missing cartilage surface or correct every source of stiffness and pain.

A clinician should assess the painful joint, movement, strength, swelling, and likely cause before recommending an injection. Discuss previous injections, allergies, infection, medicines, and your goals. Keep the follow-up plan and ask when normal activity or physiotherapy can resume. Contact the treating team for rapidly increasing joint pain, swelling, warmth, redness, fever, or difficulty moving the joint after injection. Emergency assessment is appropriate for breathing trouble, widespread hives, faintness, or swelling of the face or tongue. A hot, very painful joint should not be dismissed as ordinary post-procedure soreness.
