Hyaluronic Acid and Sun: What Should You Know?

Hyaluronic acid is a substance that helps hold water in tissues and is used in some orthopaedic injections to support movement in a joint. Sunlight does not act as a treatment for joint pain and does not make an injection work better. If hyaluronic acid is applied to the skin, it can add hydration, but it is not a sunscreen and does not block ultraviolet radiation.

After an injection, the needle site may be mildly tender or swollen for a short time. The main sun-related concern is usually the skin: heat and ultraviolet exposure can make already irritated skin feel more uncomfortable. The advice you receive may vary according to the joint treated, the injection technique, and any other procedure performed at the same visit.

Keep the injection area clean, avoid rubbing it, and use the activity limits given by your clinician. When the area is exposed, cover it with clothing or use a broad-spectrum sunscreen on intact skin as directed on the product label. Do not apply sunscreen over a fresh puncture or dressing unless your care team says it is suitable.

If you are planning outdoor activity, ask when it is reasonable to return to it and whether heat, swimming, or exercise should be limited. Do not change prescribed medicines or use an ice or heat pack directly on the area without checking the instructions you were given.

Contact the treating clinic promptly if pain, warmth, redness, or swelling is increasing rather than settling, or if fluid is draining from the injection site. Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or face, widespread hives, faintness, severe illness, or a rapidly worsening joint. These symptoms need assessment regardless of whether you have been in the sun.

Ask how long to keep the area covered, when sunscreen can be used near the site, and when you may return to exercise or swimming. Also ask which changes are expected after your particular injection and which symptoms should prompt a same-day call.
