What should you know about hum rubella vaccine?

Rubella can be mild in the person infected but may cause serious harm to an unborn baby if infection occurs during pregnancy. Vaccination prepares immune memory so the body can respond more quickly if it meets the virus. Protection is usually delivered through a combined measles, mumps and rubella vaccine rather than a rubella-only injection.

A vaccine cannot cause rubella infection. Temporary soreness, tiredness, a mild fever or a short-lived rash can occur as the immune system responds. These reactions are different from rubella itself and usually settle without specific treatment.

Check your vaccination record and tell the clinician about pregnancy, plans for pregnancy, immune-system problems, severe previous vaccine reactions and current medicines. Contact a clinician for a persistent high fever, unusual drowsiness, a seizure or a reaction that is worsening rather than settling.
