A rash can be flat or raised, dry or weeping, scaly, blistered, painful or itchy. Contact with an irritant, an allergy, heat, infection, a medicine, or an inflammatory skin condition can produce overlapping appearances. Atopic dermatitis often causes itchy, dry inflammation; contact dermatitis follows exposure; ringworm may form a scaly edge; scabies often causes intense itch with a household pattern. Seek urgent care for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, rapidly blistering or peeling skin, purple spots that do not fade with pressure, severe pain, eye involvement, or a rash with fever and marked illness. Arrange prompt assessment when the rash is spreading, infected-looking, or not improving with gentle care.
