How is Wilms tumour different in children?

Wilms tumour, also called nephroblastoma, begins in kidney tissue and is linked to early development of the kidney. It is most often identified in young children. A child may have a firm swelling in the abdomen, abdominal discomfort, blood in the urine, fever, reduced appetite or changes in urination. These signs can have many causes, so a symptom does not by itself establish cancer.

Doctors consider the child’s age, general health, scans, blood tests and tissue findings. The tumour may affect one kidney or, less commonly, both. Children’s kidneys and other organs are still developing, so treatment planning balances removing or controlling the tumour with protecting healthy kidney function and supporting growth.

Arrange a prompt assessment with a paediatrician if a child has a persistent abdominal swelling, unexplained blood in the urine, or ongoing changes in appetite or urination. Assessment may include examination, ultrasound or other imaging, blood and urine tests, and a specialist referral.

If Wilms tumour is suspected or confirmed, a paediatric oncology team may combine surgery, chemotherapy and sometimes radiotherapy. The sequence depends on scan findings, tumour features and whether one or both kidneys are involved. Follow-up checks monitor kidney function, blood pressure, growth and the possibility of recurrence.

Seek urgent medical care for severe or rapidly worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, marked drowsiness, difficulty breathing, heavy blood in the urine, or inability to pass urine. A sudden increase in abdominal size also needs prompt assessment because a swollen abdomen can have causes requiring immediate care.

Ask which kidney is affected, what the scans show, whether tissue testing is needed, how treatment will be sequenced, and how kidney function, blood pressure and development will be monitored.
