How to remove vaginal odour?

Short answer
To remove vaginal odour safely, clean the outer vulva gently, avoid products inside the vagina and arrange an examination for persistent smell or accompanying symptoms.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Outside only
- Clean the vulva; do not wash inside the vagina.
- Skip
- Scented products and internal remedies.
- Get checked
- Odour with pain, fever or unusual discharge.
Why odour can change
The vagina has a natural balance that can shift with menstruation, sweat, sex, antibiotics or irritation. A strong fishy smell, especially with thin or changed discharge, may occur with bacterial vaginosis. A retained tampon, sexually transmitted infection or another pelvic infection can also cause an unpleasant smell. The appearance and smell of discharge are clues, not a diagnosis.
Safe ways to respond
Wash the vulva with water or a fragrance-free cleanser, rinse well and pat dry. Wear breathable underwear, change damp clothes and avoid scented pads, wipes, sprays, bubble baths and vaginal washes. Do not insert yoghurt, herbs or other home remedies. If testing identifies an infection, follow the prescribed course; antibiotic treatment for pelvic infection provides further information about one treatment approach.
When an examination is needed
Book an appointment when odour persists, returns or comes with discharge, itching, soreness, pain during sex, burning urination or bleeding. Seek urgent care for pelvic pain with fever, vomiting, faintness, heavy bleeding or feeling seriously unwell. If you may have left in a tampon or other product, request medical help rather than trying repeated internal cleaning.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether a swab or urine test is appropriate, whether sexual partners need assessment, how to prevent irritation during treatment and when symptoms should improve.

Questions people ask
Can I use vaginal deodorant?
It is better to avoid it because fragrance can irritate the vulva and does not treat an underlying cause.
When does odour need testing?
Testing is sensible when the smell is new, strong, persistent or joined by discharge, itching, pain or urinary symptoms.
