Understanding practice contractions
Braxton Hicks contractions are tightening episodes caused by the uterus contracting during pregnancy. They are often irregular, do not steadily become closer together and may ease after rest, hydration or a position change. Pressure, activity, a full bladder and dehydration can make them more noticeable. A contraction pattern cannot be judged safely by discomfort alone, particularly later in pregnancy.
Ways to ease discomfort
Stop strenuous activity and rest on your side. Sip water, empty your bladder and try a slow walk if sitting has made the tightening worse. A warm shower or a warm—not hot—compress may relax tense muscles. Breathe slowly and record when tightenings start and stop. Do not take pain medicine or use a hot bath without checking that it is suitable for your pregnancy.
When to call your maternity team
Contact your maternity unit promptly if contractions become regular, stronger or closer together, do not settle with rest, or occur with fluid leakage, vaginal bleeding, pelvic pressure, backache or reduced fetal movement. Before the stage of pregnancy when labour is expected, these symptoms can signal preterm labour and need urgent assessment. Seek emergency help for heavy bleeding, severe pain or feeling faint.
Questions for your doctor
Ask how to time contractions, which number to call after hours, what fetal movement pattern is usual for you, and whether your current symptoms require an examination.

Questions people ask
Can Braxton Hicks contractions be painful?
Yes. They may feel uncomfortable or painful, but their irregular pattern and response to rest can help distinguish them from progressing labour.
Should I ignore contractions that settle?
No. Tell your maternity team about new, frequent or worrying episodes, especially if you are not yet near your expected labour period.
