Short answer

You can reduce troublesome vaginal odour with gentle external washing, breathable clothing, and treatment for an infection when one is present.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What a vaginal smell can mean

A mild scent can vary through the menstrual cycle, after exercise, or after sex. A new strong, fishy, or unpleasant smell may occur when the vaginal environment changes. Discharge that is grey, yellow, or green, itching, burning, pain when passing urine, pelvic pain, or bleeding after sex can point to an infection or another problem. A smell does not identify the cause on its own, so avoid treating it with leftover medicines or scented products.

Steps that may help

Wash the vulva gently with lukewarm water and, if needed, a mild unperfumed cleanser; do not wash inside the vagina or douche. Dry thoroughly, change out of damp clothing, choose breathable underwear, and change menstrual products regularly. Use condoms with new or untested partners while symptoms are being assessed. If odour comes with unusual discharge, irritation, or pelvic discomfort, arrange an examination and follow the prescribed treatment. Antibiotic treatment for pelvic infection is used only when a clinician identifies a suitable bacterial cause.

When to seek care

Seek prompt care for fever, worsening pelvic pain, vomiting, feeling very unwell, or symptoms during pregnancy. Book a review for persistent odour, unusual discharge, sores, bleeding after sex, or pain during sex. A retained tampon or other object needs medical removal and should not be flushed out or left in place.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether you need a swab or urine test, whether a partner also needs assessment, and which products or medicines to avoid. Tell the clinician about recent antibiotics, new partners, pregnancy possibility, and any pelvic pain.

Questions people ask

Can douching prevent vaginal odour?

No. Douching can disturb the vaginal environment and may make irritation or odour harder to resolve.

When does odour need treatment?

A persistent or newly strong smell, especially with discharge, itching, burning, pain, or fever, should be assessed so the cause can be treated appropriately.
