How to identify false labour pain

Short answer
False labour pain is usually irregular, does not steadily intensify, and may ease after rest, fluids or changing position.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What false labour pain feels like
The abdomen may tighten and relax without a predictable rhythm. Discomfort can be felt across the front of the womb, and the interval between tightenings may vary. Practice contractions can occur after activity or when the bladder is full. Their presence does not confirm that labour is beginning.
Practical steps at home
Write down the time each tightening starts and how long it lasts. Rest, drink water, empty your bladder and change position. Recheck the pattern after a short period rather than relying on how one contraction feels. Keep your maternity unit's contact details available and follow the personal instructions given during pregnancy.
When pain needs assessment
Call your maternity team if pain becomes rhythmic, stronger, longer or closer together, or fails to settle. Get urgent advice for bleeding, fluid leaking from the vagina, severe constant pain, fever, reduced fetal movement, or new pelvic pressure and low backache before term. Preterm labour can require assessment even when the pain is not severe.
Questions to ask
Ask when your team wants you to call, how to time contractions, and which symptoms should take you directly to hospital. Discuss any previous early delivery, bleeding or fluid leakage so your advice reflects your pregnancy.
