How to get rid of discharge smell

Normal discharge can vary in amount and texture during the menstrual cycle, but a new strong smell deserves attention. A fishy odour with thin discharge can occur with bacterial vaginosis. Thick discharge with marked itching is more consistent with thrush, while yellow or green discharge, pelvic pain, or pain when urinating may point to another infection. These patterns are clues rather than a diagnosis, and a clinician may need a swab to identify the right treatment.

Arrange a medical assessment if the odour persists, keeps returning, or comes with a change in colour, texture, or amount. Wash the vulva gently with lukewarm water or an unscented cleanser and pat dry. Avoid douching, scented soap, deodorant sprays, and products inserted into the vagina. Keep the area dry, change out of sweaty clothing, and use clean underwear. Do not use antibiotics or antifungal medicines left from a previous episode, because the wrong treatment can delay the correct diagnosis.

Seek prompt care for fever, pelvic or lower abdominal pain, pain when urinating, bleeding after sex or between periods, sores, vomiting, or feeling faint or unwell. If you are pregnant, recently gave birth, or may have a retained tampon, contact a clinician sooner. Symptoms that worsen during treatment or return after it finishes need review.

Ask whether your discharge needs a swab, which infections are being considered, and when you should expect improvement. Ask how to reduce irritation while waiting and whether you need sexual-health testing or advice about partners.
