How to get rid of a fishy vaginal smell

A fishy odour commonly occurs when the vaginal bacterial balance changes, particularly with bacterial vaginosis. It can be more noticeable after sex or around a period and may accompany thin, watery, greyish, or white discharge. Trichomoniasis and a retained tampon or other object can also cause an unpleasant smell. Thrush more often causes itching and thick discharge than a fishy odour, so symptoms should not be self-labelled from smell alone.

Arrange an appointment with a gynaecology or primary-care clinician, especially if the smell is new or continues. They can ask about discharge, pain, urinary symptoms, bleeding, pregnancy, and sexual exposure, and may recommend a vaginal examination or swab. Clean only the external area gently and avoid douching, perfumed products, vaginal deodorants, and home remedies. Wear breathable underwear and change out of damp clothing, but do not use these measures as a substitute for treatment if an infection is present.

Get prompt care for pelvic pain, fever, pain during urination, bleeding outside your period, pain during sex, sores, or feeling ill. Pregnancy, recent childbirth, or a possible retained tampon also warrants earlier advice. If prescribed treatment does not improve the odour or symptoms return, contact the clinician for reassessment instead of repeating leftover medicines.

Ask what may be causing the smell, whether testing for sexually transmitted infections is appropriate, and how long results may take. Ask which symptoms should trigger urgent review and whether any products or sexual activity should be avoided during treatment.
