Short answer

To control vaginal odour, wash the vulva gently, avoid douching and scented products, change damp clothing, and seek assessment for a new or strong smell.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why odour can change

A mild scent can vary with sweat, menstrual blood, sex, or normal vaginal chemistry. A new fishy or unpleasant smell may occur with an imbalance or infection, especially when discharge, itching, burning, pelvic pain, or pain during sex is also present.

The vagina cleans itself. Washing inside it can disturb its natural balance and make irritation worse. Odour alone cannot identify the cause, so an examination or swab may be needed before treatment.

What you can do at home

Rinse the outer genital area with lukewarm water and, if needed, a mild unscented cleanser. Pat dry rather than scrubbing. Choose breathable underwear, change after exercise or swimming, and change menstrual products as directed.

Avoid douches, vaginal deodorants, scented wipes, and inserting home remedies. Do not use leftover antibiotics or share treatment, because the wrong medicine can delay the right diagnosis. A clinician can recommend treatment when infection is suspected.

When to arrange care

Arrange a medical review for persistent or strong odour, unusual discharge, itching, soreness, burning when urinating, bleeding after sex, or lower abdominal pain. Seek urgent care for severe pelvic pain, fever, vomiting, fainting, or feeling acutely unwell.

If pelvic infection is diagnosed, follow the prescribed course and ask whether sexual partners need assessment. Antibiotic treatment for pelvic infection may be part of care when a clinician confirms that diagnosis.

Questions to take with you

Ask what might be causing the odour, whether testing is needed, which products to avoid, whether a partner needs testing, and how to recognise worsening symptoms.

Questions people ask

Should I wash inside the vagina?

No. Clean the outer vulva gently; washing inside can disturb natural vaginal chemistry and cause irritation.

Can antibiotics treat vaginal odour?

Only when the underlying cause requires them. A clinician should identify the cause before recommending antibiotics.
